Manchester United can solve three problem positions vs Kristiansund

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be looking for a fifth successive pre-season win as he takes his side back to his homeland of Norway.

in Oslo's Ullevaal Stadium on Tuesday night, in their penultimate pre-season clash — having enjoyed a successful tour of Australia and Asia.

It will no doubt be a special occasion for Solskjaer, against his hometown team, but he'll be looking for his United side to continue their progress and to build fitness levels ahead of the Premier League campaign.

Here are a look at the main talking points ahead of United's fifth fixture of pre-season:

Fred to battle for place

Scott McTominay has been a major beneficiary of the last few months at United. The lack of a midfield signing, plus the absence of Fred from the first two pre-season games has handed the Scot a huge chance to nail down a spot in central midfield following the departure of Ander Herrera. So far, he's grabbed it with both hands and looked very assured.

McTominay impressed towards the end of last season — one of a few United players to do so — and his form has continued in pre-season, albeit in a slightly more defensive role in a 4-2-3-1.

Yet Fred will rightly feel he can make the position his own. New signings from abroad often settle in their second season and United will hope that last summer's £52million signing can do exactly that. A deeper role alongside Paul Pogba should suit him and this should be another good opportunity for Solskjaer to find Pogba's ideal partner.

A centre-back spot up for grabs

Eric Bailly's injury and United's failure (so far) to land Harry Maguire means that the centre-back situation is far from clear as things stand. Victor Lindelof seems certain to start United's Premier League opener versus Chelsea, but his partner is anyone's guess.

Chris Smalling was his most often used partner last season and will relish the chance to build a partnership with the Swede. But don't rule out Axel Tuanzebe making himself a 'bolter' into the team to face Chelsea. He should get a chance to play at least a half in Oslo and stamp his authority on a centre-back role.

The keys to No.10

Whether United will play with a genuine No.10 this coming season is still doubtful, though Solskjaer has used the 4-2-3-1 formation regularly in pre-season — suggesting he's ready to go with a slightly more attacking system when the competitive games commence.

Yet it's a position in which United aren't particularly blessed with depth. Solskjaer has suggested Pogba will play deeper in the midfield two, so at the moment it's either Gomes or Juan Mata in the No.10 role, or possibly Jesse Lingard.

The Kristiansund game will give an opportunity to those two players — at either ends of the age spectrum — to convince Solskjaer they can start regularly his season. United have every chance against lesser opposition to play through a true No.10, with pacy players around them.

Who will be missed?

Romelu Lukaku may well have played his final game for United. MEN Sport understands the striker is pushing to leave the club amid interest from Inter Milan and hasn't travelled to Norway for this pre-season game, despite being fit again.

United have barely missed him in their pre-season outings so far. They've looked dangerous in attack when spearheaded by Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial or even youngster Mason Greenwood. Solskjaer must ensure this continues and United can put away Kristiansund without the Belgian who specialised in scoring goals against inferior opponents.

Matteo Darmian is the other player to have been left at home, although United aren't likely to miss the lesser-spotted Italian, who should find pastures new before the window closes.
