Manchester United can no longer prevent their worst fear about Man City coming true

It was a painful enough exit for Manchester United as they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Leicester City - and there could be further agony to come.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 's men lost 3-1 to Leicester in their quarter-final tie at the King Power Stadium.

Mason Greenwood had cancelled out Kelechi Iheanacho's opener but Youri Tielemans put the Foxes back in front and Iheanacho's second goal of the game ensured there was no way back for United.

Solskjaer had introduced the cavalry from the bench in a bid to save the day but even Bruno Fernandes, Edinson Cavani, Scott McTominay and Luke Shaw could not make the difference on this occasion.

Perhaps the team's Europa League exploits in Italy a few days earlier had caught up with them?

That competition still represents a chance of silverware for United this season. Victory over AC Milan at the San Siro on Thursday night - a 1-0 win giving them a 2-1 aggregate success - has set up a quarter-final showdown with Spanish side Granada.

But on the domestic front, it looks like being another trophyless campaign.

United are second in the Premier League table but trail leaders Manchester City by 14 points, albeit with a game in hand.

City's recent form does not suggest they will surrender such a lead at this stage of the season.

Pep Guardiola 's men are still in contention to win an unprecedented quadruple.

They have a Carabao Cup final against Tottenham Hotspur to look forward to next month, while they are through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, where they will face Borussia Dortmund.

And a 2-0 victory over Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday booked their place in the semi-final of the FA Cup.

If City can get past Chelsea in the last four, they will meet either Leicester or Southampton in the final on May 15.

Of course, City could yet slip up elsewhere but in losing to Leicester, United have lost the chance to directly prevent their rivals from completing a clean sweep - and surpassing their own treble achievement from 1999.

Sir Alex Ferguson led United to Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League glory in the 1998-99 campaign.

The only major trophy eluding them that season was the League Cup, in which they were knocked out at the quarter-final stage by Tottenham.

City have the chance to go one better and no doubt United fans would have loved to see their side spoil the party by winning the FA Cup this term.

Instead, barring a Premier League miracle, they will have to hope for a favour from someone else to deny City.
