Manchester United: Bruno Fernandes reacts to matching Premier League assist record

Bruno Fernandes has the chance to make Premier League history next weekend after equaling the assist record.

The United captain set up Bryan Mbeumo for his 20th top-flight assist of the season, matching the record set by Thierry Henry and matched by Kevin De Bruyne.

It helped United secure a 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest in the club’s final home game of the season, which also confirmed a third-place finish in the Premier League.

Fernandes had multiple chances to match the record as his team-mates spurned opportunities, most notably Mbeumo shortly before he scored, and the Portugal star was relieved to finally match two Premier League greats.

"I spoke about that, everybody knew it was important,” Fernandes told Sky Sports.

“They've been trying to score from my passes. I'm very happy for the assist and for the win and to finish the season on a high.”

Fernandes will get the chance to break the record in United’s final game of the season, away at Brighton, next Sunday.

He added: "I got to 20 today, let's see we have one more game. It's the highest I've done in the Premier League so I am very happy with it."

Fernandes was recently named player of the season by the Football Writers’ Association (FWA), and has been nominated for the Premier League award amid stiff competition from Arsenal’s Declan Rice.

He said: "It's a privilege and a pleasure for me, knowing that your job is being recognised by many people, that I was player of the season I am very grateful."
