Manchester United boss discusses loanee plans amid Nottingham Forest interest in James Garner

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been discussing transfer plans for his squad, amid Nottingham Forest’s interest in re-signing James Garner.

The midfielder enjoyed an impressive second half of the season on loan at the City Ground, playing a key part in helping steer Chris Hughton’s side to Championship safety.

In his 20 appearances - only one of which came as a substitute - he bagged four goals, including one on the final day of the campaign in a 2-1 defeat at home to Preston North End.

The Reds would love to get him back for 2021/22, when they will be aiming to challenge for a top six finish.

But they face competition from a number of clubs, while there is also the possibility Garner will look to push for a place at Old Trafford.

It is understood he will be assessed by United in pre-season before a final decision is made on his future.

And the club’s official website says Garner and other players returning from loans (including Ethan Laird, Teden Mengi, Di'Shon Bernard, Diogo Dalot, Andreas Pereira, Jesse Lingard, Dylan Levitt, Facundo Pellistri and Tahith Chong) could provide an option for Solskjaer “to bolster his squad” with.

The manager goes on to say: “We've had a few on loan who might come back in.

“There might be interest in a few others maybe going out. We might allow some players to go out to gain experience and come back stronger for it.

“Apart from that, it’s difficult to say (what will happen in the window). But I can't see too many outgoings. You want to come out of the window strengthened, that’s the thing.”

As well as Forest, Brighton and Hove Albion, Norwich City and Rangers have also been eyeing Garner up, according to the player’s agent, while there has also been talk about a potential loan spell abroad.
