Manchester United bid for Cristiano Ronaldo cover as Chelsea offered fresh transfer hope

Manchester United are lining up a former Premier League striker to come in late in this summer's transfer window which could spell bad news for Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 37-year-old cut a frustrated figure from the bench at Old Trafford on Sunday as he had to watch on as the Seagulls ran riot of the Red Devils, netting two goals in the first half courtesy of Pascal Gross. Ronaldo was eventually added into proceedings in the 53rd minute as he replaced Fred. Despite a slight improvement which saw Erik ten Hag's side get one back, Graham Potter's side were great value for their win.

It's a result which has already burst the Ten Hag honeymoon bubble and will only pose more questions surrounding the five-time Ballon d'Or winners immediate future ahead of the September 1 deadline. Something else that will signal worrying signs for the United fans who are in favour of seeing their club icon stay around this season is news that broke during the Super Sunday fixture.

The Athletic first reported that Man United had an opening £6.8million bid rejected for former Stoke City and West Ham forward Marko Arnautovic. It is understood that his current side Bologna are holding out for somewhere in the region of £13million.

"It's true that there’s a bid from a well-known club..." his brother Danijel said. "I'm in contact with Bologna to see if that can be realised."

The former Austrian international will turn 34 during the season and Ten Hag views him as a backup option to the likes of Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford as he would offer something different from the substitutes bench.

Could this signing signal the end for Ronaldo at United? Well it is either that or the fact that youngster Benjamin Sesko is set to snub Ten Hag and move elsewhere amid Chelsea and RB Leipzig speculation.

Regardless of Arnautovic's arrival and the knock-on effect it could have for the Portuguese, he still needs to find a potential suitor. football.london understands that Todd Boehly would potentially be keen on the 37-year-old but it's manager Thomas Tuchel that would need to change his mind if a signing was to go through before the September 1 deadline.

Instead, Tuchel has his heart set on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang currently but if negotiations don't progress for the Gabon international, Ronaldo could be an interesting option come the latter stages of this summer's transfer window.
