Manchester United's Under-23s will face Championship opposition in Huddersfield Town this Saturday in a pre-season friendly.
United announced the away game as preparation for their Premier League 2 campaign, which is set to begin in mid September in line with the new senior season. They were initially due to face Macclesfield but the Cheshire club pulled out due to their current struggles.
Neil Wood's Under-23 side have already faced Salford City, Swindon Town and Morecambe's first teams this month and are due to take on Stoke City's Under-23s tomorrow (Tuesday) night.
But the clash against Huddersfield, set for a 3pm kick off on Saturday 29th August, will be a huge test. The United youngsters play League One and League Two teams in the EFL Trophy but a Championship side will be a step up.
United's last visit to the Terriers' John Smith's Stadium came in the penultimate weekend of the 2018/19 season when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first team could not find a victory, drawing 1-1 with the relegated side. The Under-23s will hope to fare better as they prepare to take on City, Tottenham, Chelsea and other top U23 sides when the real season commences.
"It’s going to be a hard pre-season,” Wood told club media. "Last year, we had the experience of the EFL Trophy and it looks likely that we could be part of that again. I wanted the lads to experience some first-team friendlies this year before we even made that tournament because they are challenging in themselves."
