Manchester United announce new contract for Teden Mengi

Teden Mengi has become the latest Manchester United youngster to sign a new long-term deal at Old Trafford.

The 18-year-old central defender has signed a contract that will keep him at the club until June 2024, with the option of a further year.

Manchester-born Mengi has been at the club since the age of seven and his progress through the academy has gathered pace in the last 18 months, making his first-team debut last August in the Europa League tie against LASK Linz.

He was promoted to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s senior squad at the start of this season, training with the first-team squad while still playing for the Under-23s, playing 10 times for Neil Wood’s side in the first half of the season and regularly captaining the team.

Mengi joined Derby County on loan in January, working under United’s record goalscorer Wayne Rooney, who is now in charge at Pride Park.

So far there have been six appearances for the Rams, including four starts in the Championship.

Mengi is the third United youngster to put pen to paper on a new deal in the space of as many days, following in the footsteps of fellow 18-year-olds Hannibal Mejbri and Anthony Elanga. Shola Shoretire signed his first professional deal with the club last month.
