Manchester United announce 11 players are being released

Manchester United have released their retained list ahead of the 2022/23 season, with 11 players set to leave the club at the end of the month.

Erik ten Hag has been tasked with a tricky rebuilding job in his first summer at Old Trafford and will need to get to work on replacing some of the star names who will leave when their contracts expire on June 30.

Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata all confirmed they would be leaving United last week, while fellow first-teamers Nemanja Matic and Edinson Cavani have also announced their intention to depart this summer.

Veteran goalkeeper Lee Grant has retired from professional football after 22 years and will join Ipswich Town in a coaching role, where he will work alongside former United assistant Kieran McKenna.

The Manchester Evening News revealed last month that World Cup winner Pogba is expected to rejoin Juventus as a free agent, while Matic looks set for a reunion with former boss Jose Mourinho at Roma.

United have also confirmed that a number of youth team players will leave the club when their contracts expire at the end of the month.

Young forward D'Mani Mellor leaves after over a decade at the club, while midfielder Martin Svidersky has rejected a new deal at Old Trafford in order to move to La Liga.

Club sources admit that while United were keen to tie the Slovakian to a new deal, there had been a feeling that he would leave this summer for a while now. United are due to receive a small compensation package to recognise their development of the player, despite the fact Svidersky will be leaving the club as a free agent.

Academy players Reece Devine and Connor Stanley have also left the club, while Paul McShane has retired from playing and will continue in his coaching role in the academy. Goalkeeper Paul Woolston was forced to retire at the age of just 23 back in March. Meanwhile, United have triggered a one-year extension on midfielder Dylan Levitt's contract, to keep him at the club until at least June 2023.
