Manchester United and UEFA statements on LASK Linz fixture amid coronavirus fears

Manchester United have not been told by LASK Linz or UEFA that their Europa League fixture in Austria on Thursday night will be played behind closed doors.

Reports in the Austrian press on Tuesday morning suggested that the game could be played without supporters as part of new measures being introduced in the country to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

Around 900 United fans have bought tickets for the last-16 first leg tie, to be played at the Linzer Stadium, and will be monitoring developments closely.

As of Tuesday morning United had not been informed that the game would now be played behind closed doors.

A UEFA spokesman told the MEN that they were also yet to receive any confirmation that the game would be played behind closed doors, but were in close contract with local and national authorities in Austria.

The chancellor Sebastian Kurz was due to announce a range of new measures to outline their response to the threat of the coronavirus, one of which was plans to restrict all outdoor events to a maximum capacity of 500 until the middle of April.

A LASK spokesman said: "Following a statement from Austrian Chancellor Kurz, Health Minister Anschober & Interior Minister Nehammer, we ask your patience at this time and more information will be available soon."
