Manchester United and Man City 'pledge their interest in Dayot Upamecano' and more transfer rumours

Manchester United and Manchester City have both made their desire to sign Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig known, according to reports.

Upamecano has developed into one of Europe's most highly rated defenders in recent years and played a pivotal role in Leipzig reaching the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in their history last season.

As a result, several of the continent's biggest clubs have been linked with the 22-year-old, with United and City always amongst the touted names.

According to SportBild, via SportWitness, the two Manchester clubs have 'pledged their interest' in Upamecano, alongside Spanish giants Real Madrid.

The Frenchman signed a new contract last summer, amid speculation he could leave Germany, keeping him at Leipzig until 2023 but it's reported that a release clause was added into the extension.

It's claimed that Upamecano will be free to leave for €45m, an attractive price to many clubs in the current market, but it will only become active next summer.

United have struggled at the back so far this season and, although defence wasn't a priority this past summer, they realised the need to strengthen at left-back late on and signed Alex Telles.

A move for a new centre-back could be on the agenda next summer and United have previously scouted Upamecano when he was a teenager.

City, however, seem less likely to make a move after they spent nearly £100million on centre-backs, in the shape of Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake, in the previous window.

Meanwhile, Sporting Lisbon have reached an agreement with reported United target Nuno Mendes to increase his release clause with a new contract - according to reports.

Mendes have been continually linked with a move to Old Trafford and  Record  feature his new deal on their front page today.

The Portuguese daily suggest United targeted Mendes during their negotiations for Bruno Fernandes as the duo share the same agent.
