Manchester United and Man City open to possibility of playing women's game at Old Trafford and The Etihad

Manchester United and Manchester City are both open to the possibility of staging a women's game at Old Trafford and The Etihad, but it won't be happening this season.

England national team manager Phil Neville called on Premier League teams, including City and United, to open up the home grounds for the men's team to give women's football a boost ahead of this summer's World Cup.

“What I would say is now there are some teams, the big teams, who have got to open their big stadiums and fill it. Let’s blow the rest of Europe away because I think the game in this country is in a far better place than what it is in Spain or in Italy," Neville said.

“If Manchester United or Arsenal win the league, throw open your stadium. Champions League game for Chelsea - why not play it at Stamford Bridge? Get 30,000 or 40,000."

City did play at the Etihad back in 2014, but they only drew a crowd of 1,462 and they have their own ground in the Academy Stadium which is just a stone's throw across the road. While Casey Stoney's United side were only established in the summer and have yet to play at Old Trafford.

MEN Sport understands United are discussing the possibility of a game at Old Trafford next season while City could explore the possibility of another game at the Etihad.

However, it is understood that logistical reasons mean it will not be happening this season.

Manchester United have three games left at home this season, one being a potential title clincher against Crystal Palace on April 20, while City have an FA Cup semi final against Chelsea and one home league game against Yeovil left to play.

It is also understood City have concern over the atmosphere at the game should it be moved to a bigger stadium. The Blues have regularly drawn crowds of around 1,500 this season and there is a belief that in some instances a better atmosphere can be created in their purpose-built ground.

Neville's comments come after Juventus Women played in front of 39,000 at the Allianz Arena and 60,739 watched Atletico play Barcelona at the Wanda Metropolitano.

United broke the attendance record for the Continental Cup earlier in the season when 4,835 supporters to watch Stoney's side face Reading in August.
