Manchester United and Man City in Todd Cantwell race and more transfer rumours

Manchester United and Man City are both keeping their eyes on Norwich City playmaker Todd Cantwell, according to reports.

Both Manchester clubs have suffered underwhelming first-halves of the season, with City falling 14 points behind Liverpool in the Premier League title race and United remaining inconsistent with several disappointing results.

With the January transfer window open there is now the opportunity for Pep Guardiola and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to strengthen their sides and, according to the Daily Mail, they are both 'keeping tabs' on Cantwell.

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder is having a fine debut season in the Premier League and continues to shine despite the Canaries sitting at the bottom of the table.

Cantwell bagged his sixth goal of the season against Crystal Palace on New Years Day and has also scored against Chelsea, City, Everton, Arsenal and Wolves.

United are expected to try to add to their midfield options in January following injuries to Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay and remain in need of a creative midfielder after struggling all season to break down stubborn defences.

James Maddison of Leicester City is a target while Aston Villa's Jack Grealish has also been linked.

City have reportedly 'been monitoring Cantwell’s progress for a number of years'. It's said that Cantwell will cost £30million, with Tottenham also reported to be interested.

Meanwhile, City are taking a keen look at promising duo Mohamed Ihattaren of PSV Eindhoven and Basel’s Noah Okafor, reports HITC.

19-year-old Okafor is already a Switzerland international and the rapid winger is said to be attracting interest from Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and Sevilla.

Ihattaren is equally impressive and the playmaker already has nine goals and nine assists to his name this season at just 17-years of age.

Finally, Chris Smalling has told his representatives that he wants to secure a permanent move to Roma, according to reports.

BBC Sport  suggest the 30-year-old is keen to pursue a future in the Italian capital after a successful start to his loan-spell.
