Manchester United and Manchester City fans will discover whether they can return to their clubs' stadiums for the final two weeks of the Premier League season today (Monday).
Boris Johnson is due to give a 5pm press conference from Downing Street where he is expected to confirm the relaxation of lockdown measures.
In the provisional roadmap set out by the Prime Minister several months ago, groups of 30 people are permitted to meet outdoors, while six people or two households can meet indoors from Monday, May 17.
Crucially for football supporters, this could allow a limited number of home supporters to return to grounds for the final two weeks of the season.
Mr Johnson is expected to confirm that football stadiums are among the outdoor venues that should be able to welcome a 25 per cent capacity of venues, up to a limit of 10,000 people.
United and City fans were unable to enter their grounds during the Christmas period when cities in Tier 2 were allowed to welcome 2,000 fans into their grounds, though this was short-lived as the country soon descended into another national lockdown.
The Premier League released a statement last week confirming that home fans only will be able to attend the final two rounds of fixtures, after they shifted the penultimate round of matches so that all clubs would be able to host a home fixture after May 17.
United face Fulham on Tuesday, May 18, at Old Trafford, whilst City host Everton on the final day of the season, Sunday, May 23.
