Manchester United and Man City fans face new covid measures attending matches

Manchester United and Manchester City fans aged 18 and over must show either their NHS Covid vaccine pass or proof of a negative test result within the previous 48 hours to attend Premier League games, from today.

Supporters of all top-flight outfits are required to complete a Covid status self-declaration on their club's website prior to attending a game and be prepared to show their Covid pass on arrival.

The Premier League have announced that fans of all clubs — including those of United and City — risk being denied entry into a ground if they are unable to do so.

Masks must be worn while in indoor stadium areas and while travelling to the match on public transport.

The Premier League also asks that face coverings are worn in congested areas and the stands, albeit this is not mandatory when in the "stadium bowl." It also reiterates that those with symptoms of Covid-19 should not travel to a game and stay at home.

These restrictions have come into place after the government introduced its 'Plan B' regulations for autumn and winter, to tackle the new Omicron variant of the virus.

The measures will be in operation for United's game at Old Trafford with Brighton on Saturday and City's next game away at Newcastle on Sunday.

Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters said: "We are doing all we can to keep fans safe and grounds open at full capacity.

"The safety of everyone remains our priority and since the start of the season we have been working closely with our clubs, Government and local public health authorities to prepare fans and stadium operations for the introduction of COVID certification.

“It is really important fans take the time to understand what is required of them when attending Premier League stadiums, which is why we are asking fans to declare their COVID status ahead of a matchday.

"We want everyone to enjoy matches in safe environments and we and our clubs will continue to urge fans to do all they can and follow public health guidance.”

Premier League clubs have been asking fans to provide proof of their Covid status since the beginning of the season and will now contact their supporters to provide more detail regarding their respective declaration processes, as well as further Covid-safety information regarding their specific stadiums.

League officials say they will continue to work with government and local health authorities to bring its safety measures in line with the latest guidance.

United had their Tuesday night game with Brentford postponed due to a Covid outbreak at the club.
