Manchester United and Man City discover Papa John's Trophy group stage opponents

Manchester United youngsters will travel to The Stadium of Light in the Papa John's Trophy this season after being paired with Sunderland in the group stages.

United and Manchester City have once again been invited to enter under-21 sides to the controversial EFL Trophy, which pits League One and League Two sides against Premier League academy sides.

Last season, United beat Salford 6-0, overcame Rochdale on penalties, then lost to Morecambe to finish second in their group and reach the knockout rounds. There, they lost 3-2 to Accrington.

This year, they face a tricky group against holders Sunderland, their League One rivals Lincoln and League Two side Bradford.

City, who comfortably beat Mansfield and Scunthorpe before losing to Lincoln on penalties in last year's group stage, will face their third trip to Glanford Park since they were among the first Premier League sides to join the competition.

This year, they face Scunthorpe, Doncaster and Rotherham in the group stage, where they will be looking to go further than last season's second-round defeat to Tranmere.

All of United and City's games will be played away from home, as per rules in the EFL Trophy. That means Neil Wood's United youngsters get to experience two of the more impressive EFL grounds in the Stadium of Light and Valley Parade.

City are yet to confirm a replacement for last season's EDS head coach Enzo Maresca, who has left to manage Parma in Italy.
