Manchester United and Liverpool table Premier League shake-up plan as English top flight could shrink

Liverpool and Manchester United have reportedly proposed a radical plan that would see England's top flight reduced to 18 clubs.

The Premier League was founded in 1992 as a breakaway from the Football League.

Clubs have operated on a 'one club one vote' principle since then, with 14 votes needed for any proposal to pass, but bold plans are on the table to change the system.

According to both the Sunday Telegraph and Sky Sports News Liverpool and United have put plans on the table to reduce the league to 18 teams.

Dubbed 'Project Big Picture' the plans would see the nine clubs who have been in the Premier League for the longest given more power.

The division would be reduced to 18 teams, leaving the so-called 'Big Six' free to play more games in an expanded Champions League which is expected to be introduced from 2024.

Under the plans 25 per cent of the Premier League’s annual revenue will go to the EFL clubs with £250million paid up front to see them through the current crisis.

The English FA would also be given £100m, with the two clubs hoping that Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur will join them in backing the plans.
