Manchester United already moving onto other targets as they wait for first transfer

Manchester United are already moving on to other targets in the transfer window as they wait to finalise their first signings of the summer.

United are aiming to complete the signings of Frenkie de Jong and Tyrell Malacia before they fly to Bangkok for the start of their pre-season tour on July 8. United have agreed fees for the Netherlands internationals, who have been on holiday following their involvement in the June round of Nations League matches.

The move for left-back Malacia, 22, threatened to become complicated as the player was attempting to change agents prior to the transfer. Malacia and De Jong are currently represented by the same agency and United say the issue is now resolved.

United went the whole of June without a single signing for the first time since 2010 but are lining up reinforcements elsewhere.

Manager Erik ten Hag is targeting at least five signings, with United also in the market for a forward, a centre-back and a back-up goalkeeper.

Ten Hag is interested in centre-back Lisandro Martinez and forward Antony, both at Ajax, and the former Ajax and Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen.

Sergio Romero is interested in rejoining United one year after officially leaving the club. Romero, 36, did not play whatsoever in his last season at United and was appalled by his treatment under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward after a prospective move to Everton was blocked.

With Solskjaer and Woodward now gone, Romero is receptive to reuniting to support fellow Spanish-speaker David de Gea, a successful alliance between 2015-20. De Gea also expressed sympathy for United's tawdry handling of Romero.

Romero played 61 times for United and suffers from a chronic knee injury that restricts him to a limited number of appearances per season. He was an ever-present in United's triumphant Europa League run in 2017 and started in the final against Ajax.

Louis van Gaal brought Romero to United in 2015, having worked with him at AZ Alkmaar when they won the Eredivisie.
