Manchester United already have the perfect defender for Ralf Rangnick’s pressing system

Plenty has been said about Ralf Rangnick's philosophy and based on Manchester United's victory against Crystal Palace, it's clear it's already having an effect.

Known as the 'godfather of gegenpressing,' Rangnick's theories around football have already been embedded into United's squad because they won possession in the final third more times than any other occasion since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. That can only be commended!

Despite Rangnick's blistering start, we cannot hide the fact that some of these players have been under the reigns of two other managers who eventually got the sack. So, some blame has to lie on them, but they all get a clean slate because you never know what a new coach can do.

There have been plenty of out-of-form individuals who I could name, but I don't want to criticise everyone in the squad because it's a collective responsibility. All of them should be held to account.

But, if Sunday's match against Palace is anything to go by, then I think we'll gradually see an improvement and one area which certainly needs to step up is the defence.

The clean sheet kept against Patrick Vieira's team was the first at Old Trafford in 235 days and when you consider how bad it's been in recent weeks, that's a major positive!

Even with that clean sheet taken into consideration, United have conceded nine goals in their last five Premier League matches - a terrible showing for a side that had title aspirations this season.

This obviously hasn't been helped by the injury of Raphael Varane, but you expect better. However, you could also argue that things have improved in recent weeks, as United have conceded three times in their last four matches in all competitions.

There's one player who's stepped up in the heart of defence in recent weeks, and it feels like he has all the attributes needed to thrive as a Rangnick-type defender.

That man is Victor Lindelof.

The Swedish international has received his fair-share of criticism since he's been at United and was definitely one of the reasons why the club eventually signed Varane, but he's definitely played well in the last few matches.

Although he lacks aerial presence, he is United's most comfortable defender when the ball is on the deck. What's noticeable is that he's good with his defensive positioning, but the problem for him under Solskjaer was that he was regularly outmuscled and stepped out of his backline, which meant the defence was open because Harry Maguire lacks the pace to track back.

If we look at Lindelof's heat map this season, we can see that he's spent more time pushing up a lot higher, almost going into midfield on occasions. However, this is exactly what Rangnick probably wants from a defender.

Seeing as Rangnick's philosophy is all about pressing, playing with a higher defensive line pushes the team up the pitch, which is what you need when playing a pressing game on the front foot.

You also need your defenders to be able to play forward passes for the transition, and passing is another strength of Lindelof's. As per SofaScore.com, he's averaged an 86 percent pass success rate, with 2.3 accurate long balls per match.

When you think about some of Rangnick's former defenders who partnered Dayot Upamecano [who's got attributes similar to Varane], like Willi Orban or Ibrahima Konate, they feel like players who fit the Lindelof-mould and when Varane does come back, I think it's worth partnering them two together, just to experiment.

He's stepped up and I think he'll thrive under Rangnick.
