Manchester United agree fee with Man City for talented youngster

Manchester United are expected to complete the signing of teenager Charlie McNeill after agreeing a fee with Manchester City that could rise to £1.35m.

McNeill, 17, cost the Blues £12,000 when he joined the academy from United six years ago and his goalscoring exploits - he is credited with 600 goals at youth level - have also seen him recognised at international level with a number of appearances for England Under-16s.

After seeing his opportunities at Under-18 level limited at City, McNeill opted to reject the offer of a deal and left the club in June. However, because he did not turn 17 until this week anybody that wanted to sign the forward still had to negotiate a fee with his former club or risk a tribunal deciding his value.

United have agreed a price with City for an initial £750,000 potentially rising to £1.35m, with the Blues also getting a chunk of any future sale for the player; a deal is expected to be completed shortly.

McNeill, a United fan, will add to what has been a busy summer of recruitment in the club's academy. Alejandro Garnacho, Marc Jurado and Alvaro Fernandez have all been recruited from Spanish academies, while Isak Hansen-Aaroen, Joe Hugill, Logan Pye and Radek Vitek have also been brought in.

The first Under-18s derby of the season is scheduled to be played at the City Football Academy on October 3, with the return fixture pencilled in for February 13.
