Manchester United 'add Sporting Lisbon captain Bruno Fernandes to list of transfer targets'

Manchester United are weighing up a move for the Sporting Lisbon captain Bruno Fernandes, according to reports.

The 24-year-old goalscoring midfielder is said to be on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's list of potential transfer targets should he be given the permanent manager's role at the club in the summer.

The London Evening Standard report that Solskjaer is keen to fill the midfield berth vacated by Marouane Fellaini in January with a player capable of contributing to the Reds' goals next season and Fernandes is thought to fit the bill.

Fernandes, who has been capped 11 times by Portugal, has 24 goals in 43 appearances to his name this season.

Meanwhile, it is claimed that Solskjaer has told Ed Woodward that he wants a cull of United's squad in the summer.

Alexis Sanchez tops the list of three players who Solskjaer wants to see leave in the summer, according to the Star.

The Chile international has failed to live up to expectations since his arrival from Arsenal in January 2018, scoring just five goals in 41 appearances.

The Liverpool FC transfer pattern Manchester United should emulate this summer

Sanchez's wages - thought to be around £500,000 a week after moving to Old Trafford without a transfer fee - are said to be a sticking point with regard to incomings in the summer.

And Solskjaer has told United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward that he wants the forward, who has been ravaged by injury problems this season, off United's books.

Club captain Antonio Valencia is also reported to be out of Solskjaer's plans for next season.

United passed on the option to extend the right-back's contract by a further year earlier this month an the Ecuador international is set to leave the club on a free transfer after ten years' service in the summer.

Manchester United star Paul Pogba makes Marcus Rashford and Kylian Mbappe prediction

Valencia has made eight appearances for the Reds this season, the last of which came in the 2-0 win at Newcastle on January 2.

Marcos Rojo is said to be the third member of Solskjaer's imminent cull.

The 29-year-old has been training with former club Estudiantes in his native Argentina this week after making just three appearances for United this season.

Rojo was injured playing in the World Cup for Argentina last summer and has still to recover the levels expected of him at Old Trafford, with 110 United appearances to his name since his 2014 arrival from Sporting Lisbon.
