Manchester United academy graduate set for January transfer to Braga

Former Manchester United youngster Dion McGhee is braced for a January move to Portuguese side Braga.

McGhee, 20, has been without a club since being released by United in the summer but has attracted interest from the likes of Rangers, West Ham and AZ Alkmaar, as well as clubs in Spain and Germany.

He revealed to MEN Sport in November that he was set to kickstart his career with a new move, after admitting the Covid-19 pandemic had made it tough for free agent players.

The MEN now understand terms have been agreed with Braga and McGhee is excited about his new opportunity in Portugal. He will play under former Swansea and Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal and wants to get regular football, something he wasn't able to get in the United first team before his departure.

McGhee should complete the move on Friday and is raring to go after a few months out of the game.

He was on a nine-man United released list in June, alongside Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Demetri Mitchell, Ethan Hamilton, George Tanner, Aidan Barlow, Kieran O’Hara, Alex Fojticek and Largie Ramazani. United only released players aged 19 or older, keeping younger stars to protect them amid the uncertainty created by the pandemic.

"It was a good 14 years at Manchester United, with so many great staff and players," said McGhee.

"I'm still in contact with both Mason [Greenwood] and Marcus [Rashford] and they are top lads, who have a very bright future. And I'm so proud of what they have achieved, as well as Brandon [Williams} and Teden Mengi and others. They deserve all that is coming.

"I’m still a Manchester United fan and always will be. Neil Ryan and Kieran McKenna were key in my development and I really enjoyed working under them."
