Brighton

Robert Sánchez He did not have much to do, but a sharp save from Eriksen proved his concentration and in the 114th minute he denied Rashford a certain goal. 7/10

Pascal Gross Ducked inside when Brighton advanced though was wary of Shaw’s desire to race behind. Moved to right-wing later. Scored penalty. 7

Adam Webster Was solid when United finally awoke and made the tie a contest. Battled impressively throughout on an energy-sapping afternoon. Scored penalty. 7

Lewis Dunk Captain padded into midfield to begin attacks but a risky ball let Martial in. Threat at corners and showed why he wears the armband. Scored penalty. 7

Pervis Estupiñán Roved along his channel as part of Brighton’s flowing patterns, and was teak-tough when required to defend. Scored penalty. 7

Alexis Mac Allister Brilliant free-kick had De Gea panther-like to repel, his battle with Casemiro an intriguing subplot. Scored penalty. 7

Moisés Caicedo With Mac Allister next to him it was why United were overrun often, and could be magisterial when stepping forward. 7

Solly March Tracked back, recovered from knock, and penchant for cutting in gave those in red nightmares. Loses mark for crucial penalty miss. 6

Kaoru Mitoma Very good. Speed and direct threat from twinkling toes and might have notched a hat-trick or created one. Shown a yellow card. 8

Danny Welbeck Veteran made a hash of a clear header at a corner he should have converted and was possibly injured when replaced. 6

Julio Enciso Sparkled until taken off, 19-year-old Paraguayan floated across front and though he missed a glaring chance, substitution was a surprise. 7

Substitutes: Joel Veltman 6 (for Enciso, 67) 6; Denis Undav (for Welbeck, 75) Scored penalty, 6.

Manchester United

David de Gea Responded to stinker at Sevilla with two acrobatic stops from Mac Allister and Enciso plus low stop from March and at feet of Gross. No penalty saves - again - proved immaterial. 7

Aaron Wan-Bissaka Impressive. Composed, one brilliant tackle with a telescopic leg on Mitoma showed desire, and second-half surge ignited side. 8

Victor Lindelöf Aggressive and accomplished, one of his finest United outings. Positioning was expert, as shown by Franco Baresi-like challenge that nicked ball off Welbeck. Extra point for winning penalty. 8 (man of the match)

Luke Shaw Took booking for team after Dalot’s error. Moved inside from left-back due to Harry Maguire’s suspension and was a willing overlapper – when possible. 7

Diogo Dalot Again switching flanks, the Portuguese’s underhit pass left Casemiro stranded and caused Shaw’s yellow card. Scored penalty. 6

Casemiro Minor shocker versus Sevilla followed by clumsy booking today: four-game suspension still has him reaching for finest form. Scored penalty. 5

Christian Eriksen Looked to break forward but often passed too long or short and was replaced on a day to forget. 5

Antony Foul on Mitoma placed United under pressure and though he tracked back was ineffective and did not survive for extra time. 6

Bruno Fernandes Urged team on and was always intent on causing havoc for the opponent. Might have nicked the opener as interval neared. 7

Marcus Rashford One through-ball to Fernandes was too heavy but he was alert and nutmegged Mac Allister. Was energetic all the way to penalties. Scored his. 7

Anthony Martial Starved, he overhit a chip with Sánchez off his line but kept scouting for a sniff of a strike. Taken off. 6

Substitutes: Fred (for Eriksen, 62) 7; Jadon Sancho (for Martial, 85) Scored penalty, 7; Marcel Sabitzer (for Antony, 90) Scored penalty, 7; Tyrell Malacia (for Wan-Bissaka, 101) 5; Wout Weghorst (for Fernandes, 101) Scored penalty, 6.
