Manchester traffic chiefs have dig at Liverpool FC with cheeky Man City pre-match sign

Traffic bosses have risked the wrath of Liverpool fans with a cheeky sign ahead of Manchester City's clash with Cardiff this week.

The in-form Blues can go back top of the Premier League with a win over the Welsh side in a game-in-hand being played on Wednesday night.

Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock yesterday threatened to play his reserve side at the Etihad in a protest at referring decisions which have gone against them.

They lost 2-1 to Chelsea yesterday after two late goals, including an equaliser from Cesar Azpilicueta who appeared to be in an offside position.

Speaking afterwards Warnock said: "We keep getting knock-backs. I will probably play the U23s on Wednesday against Manchester City and try to keep it down to 10 or 11.

"It doesn't matter who you play at the minute, it is who has a flag in his hand and who has a whistle.

"If I was a Burnley, Southampton or a Brighton fan, they will be absolutely loving it today.

"I've had one kick in the teeth after another this season and the players have as well. But we've always bounced back. So we'll probably play the 23s at City and get ready for Burnley."

And in their signs warning people of delays ahead of the game, TfGM said: "Manchester City vs Cardiff under 23s. Weds 3rd April. Delays expected."

And the April Fool's Day gag did not go unnoticed amongst eagle-eyed football fans.

Blues fanatic Raff posted a snap of the sign on Twitter saying: "I’ve just taken this on Kingsway, scousers are gonna be fuming."

Dozens of people replied saying they thought it was "hilarious" and bound to wind-up their Merseyside neighbours.

A TfGM spokeswoman said: “The intention of our roadside signs is to inform as many people as possible of upcoming events so that they can plan their journeys in advance.

“We’re glad that this light-hearted message has brought a smile to people’s faces on April Fool’s Day and helped us get out an important message about the potential for match-related travel delays.”

It's not the first time the transport body have had a bit of fun with their pre-match warnings.

TfGM gave a nod to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last week (@ManUtd)

After Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was confirmed as the new Manchester United boss last week, their signs displayed messages saying "Ole's at the wheel" - a reference to the Norwegian's terrace chant - adding "keep your hands on yours."

City slipped back to second in the table yesterday after a late own goal handed Liverpool victory against Spurs at Anfield.

But the Blues can return to the summit, with both teams having played the same amount of games, with victory against Neil Warnock's men on Wednesday.

City manager Pep Guardiola has already said he will rotate his squad with the Blues facing eight games in a month as they continue their pursuit of an unprecedented quadruple.
