Manchester skyscraper hits the market ahead of major transformation

A landmark skyscraper in Manchester city centre has hit the market ahead of a major transformation project.

The former CIS Tower has been put up for sale by Castlebrooke Investments which acquired the 28-storey building for £66m in 2017.

The skyscraper was rebranded as Society last year and will feature 420,000 sq ft of workspace and leisure accommodation when the project is completed.

The tower will provide 143,527 sq ft of workspace across 26 floors while the podium element will feature 207,379 sq ft.

At street level, food, retail and leisure amenities will be opened.

Colliers and BSB Investment + Development have been hired to market the building which was originally constructed in the 1960s and was Manchester's first skyscraper.

It was previously the home to Cooperative Insurance but is currently vacant.

The grade two-listed building sits at the centre of the NOMA estate. When it was first completed, it was the country’s largest building before being overtaken by London’s Millbank Tower.

Castlebrooke has also been behind the development of the 178,000 sq ft Landmark office on the former Odeon site in Manchester’s St Peter’s Square .

According to the sale documents, Society will be capable of accommodating up to 3,200 people.

A spokesperson from Castlebrooke said: "Castlebrooke has worked strategically alongside core stakeholders to put measures in place to deliver what is now believed to be the best ‘oven ready’ redevelopment opportunity in Manchester.

"The global prestige and iconic reputation of the former CIS Tower, alongside Castlebrooke’s compelling vision for the scheme, has brought about interest from investors/developers across the globe.

"As such, we believe now is the right time to offer the opportunity up to one of the many interested parties to take the asset forward."

A spokesperson added: "The opportunity to deliver such high-quality accommodation over a short time horizon is unmatched elsewhere in the city and is the asset’s unique, differentiating factor.

"Castlebrooke is cognisant of the fact that it is a guardian/custodian of this iconic architectural gem and will work with Manchester City Council to ensure that an appropriate developer/investor is selected."
