Manchester singer fails to make it through to The Voice semi-finals as viewers slam 'awful' song choice

A shy open mic singer from Manchester battled his nerves to perform in the knockout rounds of The Voice - but it wasn't enough the make it through to the semi-finals.

Ayanam Udoma took to the stage with a rendition of Thunder by Imagine Dragons on the ITV singing competition as coaches Sir Tom Jones, Jennifer Hudson, Olly Murs and will.i.am wittled down their teams from six to two.

The 27-year-old, who performs four times a week at open mic events in the city, lost his place in the competition to Cedric Neal after he almost brought the pairs coach Sir Tom to tears with his version of Bridge Over Troubled Water.

However fans of the singer were left angered by Sir Tom's song choice for his act.

One viewer said: "I really like his voice but that song is rubbish and didn't show it off at all."

Another added: "What an awful song choice for him."

A third said: "That was shocking! I'm astounded by that reaction n song choice team Tom! Awful!"

Before his endearing performance, Ayanam said that he struggled to "get his head around" that he had made it this far in the competition.

But there could still be a chance for his return thanks to a series twist.

In a series first, a 'lifeline' vote is being introduced which will allow the public to vote for their favourite to go through to the semis - if they weren't the judges choices.

Viewers will be invited to vote via the official app with presenter Emma Willis opening the vote at the end of Saturday's (March 23) show and the public will have until 11.30pm that same evening to vote.

In his blind audition, Ayanam put a unique spin on the Oasis classic Wonderwall - winning a chair turn from Sir Tom and a heap of praise from viewers.

One viewer even told Noel Gallagher on Twitter: "There’s a dude singing your song better than Liam. 'Wonderwall' is a TUNE!"
