Manchester shooting: Girl, 16, rushed to hospital after gunman opens fire on party crowd

A 16-year-old girl has been rushed to hospital after a gunman opened fire at a crowd during a drive-by shooting.

Dozens of officers descended on the scene following reports of gunfire in the Moss Side area of Manchester, the Manchester Evening News reports.

A 16-year-old girl was rushed to hospital following the shooting, although she is not seriously hurt.

Police believe a single shot was fired from a passing vehicle at a crowd of party-goers.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "Detectives from our Longsight CID are investigating the incident and believe that a single shot was fired by a passing vehicle at a crowd outside the address where a party was being held.

"It is not thought that the girl was the intended target but enquiries are moving at pace to establish the reason for the incident and – ultimately – the people responsible for it.

"An extensive cordon is in place as we continue to investigate the scene, and we thank the local community for their cooperation while this takes place.

"We have additional officers patrolling the area this weekend and encourage anyone with concerns or information to approach us to talk in confidence.

"No arrests have been made and we are urging people who saw or heard anything to contact us, or to call Crimestoppers if they don’t want their name and details to be known to us."

One witness described how they saw people "running" after hearing a gunshot.

They wrote on social media: "When I came past there on Princess Rd at about 10:30 I heard a gunshot, then saw a couple of people running..."

A GMP spokesman previously said: "Police are currently responding to a reported firearms discharge on Quinney Crescent, Manchester.

"Road closures are in place. Members of the public are asked to avoid the area."

Manchester’s Moss Side area has an unenviable reputation for high levels of crime and two years ago, two men were shot dead at an alleged illegal lockdown party.
