Manchester's smart new gastropub that's home to cricket batting cages

One of Manchester's permanently shuttered restaurants has been converted into a smart gastropub that's all about cricket.

The former Alston Bar & Beef restaurant, in a basement unit at the Corn Exchange, has been fitted with futuristic batting cages.

The new concept comes from Sixes Cricket Club, already well-established in London.

This is the concept's first venture out of the capital and the latest competitive gaming experience to open in Manchester city centre.

Locals can already bowl, axe-throw, golf, shoot and play ping-pong with pints - but now you can take on the cricket pitch.

In each batting cage, players are faced with a large screen that shows an animation of a bowler running up, before a cricket ball is launched from a small hole in the screen.

The cutting-edge BatFast technology allows you to choose the speed and difficulty of the bowl, and pick a cricket bat that suits your skill level too.

Sensors placed all around the batting cage will keep track of your score.

Sixes also serves a gastropub menu of burgers, salads and slow-cooked meats.

A hero dish on the menu is the 'meat volcano', a mix of braised beef burnt ends, bone marrow, Applewood cheddar, bone marrow flatbreads and crispy onions.

Liam Mooney, general manager at the Corn Exchange said: "We are so excited with the latest edition to the Corn Exchange.

"Sixes has thrived at their two locations down south and we can’t wait for the people of Manchester to enjoy the cricket themed bar.

"Having fun and enjoying a day out with friends and family is what the Corn Exchange is all about and Sixes restaurant supplies this aplenty, so we’re sure this is going to be a huge hit once opened."
