Manchester's smallest cocktail bar has opened in a cupboard in Didsbury

A new cafe-bar has opened in Didsbury, and it might well be the smallest hospitality business to ever open in the region.

Kiosk on Lapwing has taken over a former storage cupboard on Lapwing Lane, sandwiched in a metre-wide unit next to the post office.

Although tiny, at four square metres, the bar has big ambitions and has already proven a hit with locals.

It's been founded by Jemma O'Brien, who has spent more than a decade working in Manchester's hospitality industry and lives in the flat above the bar.

She says that the 'dead space' is supposed to be the access to her flat, but stairs have never been built there, and it's instead been used as storage for Wine & Wallop's outdoor furniture.

That dead space has now been given a colourful makeover, with a terrazzo-style counter at the front and pink walls inside, from which she sells top-quality coffees, local beers, and a small selection of cocktails.

Kiosk on Lapwing will also be an exclusive stockist of cakes and pastries from Longbois Bakehouse in Levenshulme, which has had customers queueing down the street ever since it opened.

The bar is so small that Jemma doesn't even have space to stock bottles of prosecco, and instead has sparkling wine on tap.

There's no room for customers inside either, but tables and chairs line the sunny, south-facing pavement in the evenings and weekends.

She said she's always hoped to open a bar in Didsbury, and decided to finally take the plunge earlier this year.

She says her life was beginning to 'resemble a Shane Meadows drama' before opening Kiosk on Lapwing.

"I lost most of my work because of Covid," Jemma said.

"I was just on Universal Credit, sat upstairs in my flat, split up with my fella, just staring at the traffic lights alone in the middle of lockdown, and I was like 'Come on Jemma, this isn't you, snap the f*** out of it'.

"So I just decided to make that cupboard a coffee shop!"

Local suppliers, alongside Longbois Bakehouse, include Blossom coffee roasters, Le Social wine shop, and First Chop brewery.

There's a concise menu of cocktails - negronis, spritzes, and espresso martinis - to sample from the tiny bar.

Jemma says: "It was just dead space, totally dead space that everyone just walked past.

"I saw it as primo real estate in M20.

"It's been amazing so far. Saturday and Sunday it was just full all night, there was never a table empty.

"And it's all come from my mad little brain."

With barely room to stretch inside Kiosk on Lapwing, she's had to be clever with building the bar.

She says: "I don't have a cellar or anything, everything is in that one by three metre space. The coffee machine, the beer lines, the gas, the beer cooler, the glass wash, a hand wash sink. I had to put fizz on draught because I don't have space for bottles!

"We used piano hinges on the hatch because every little bit of space has to be perfectly used.

"Nothing can be standard-sized, I've had to make everything - my ice well is an Ikea trolley and a £20 sink off Facebook Marketplace.

"I'm having to choose my beer based on who's doing small kegs, I don't have the space for a 50 litre keg!

"I've had so much help from some incredible people - Ben from CBRB did all my beer line install, another guy called Ant who both converts vans and builds bar, he was the perfect person.

"And I'm trying to do everything as eco-friendly as possible, like the front counter is very cool, it's made out of recycled fridges, film spools and picnic cutlery that couldn't otherwise be recycled."

Kiosk on Lapwing is open for takeaway, with outside seating in the evenings and weekends, Wednesday to Sunday.
