Manchester's Northern Monk bar launches cannabis oil beer with Green Times Brewing

Cannabis oil is cropping up all over the high street, from vape shops to coffee houses and bars.

CBD - a legal hemp extract that won't get you high - has become a popular supplement with advocates claiming it can help with a host of health problems, although the science still lags behind its marketing.

Northern Quarter bar Northern Monk Refectory is the latest Manchester establishment to seize on the trend, teaming up with the city's Green Times Brewing to create a CBD IPA.

Brewed at Northern Monk's Leeds headquarters, Green Heathen is a twist on its core range beer Heathen.

The 7.2% ABV ale contains 10mg of CBD (cannabidiol) per pint. The compound is extracted from hemp, a variety of the cannabis sativa plant with negligible levels of THC, the psychoactive substance found in marijuana that produces its mind-altering high.

Northern Monk founder Russell Bisset said the brewery always aimed to be progressive.

"The collaboration with Green Times Brewing gave us the opportunity to brew a groundbreaking beer," he said.

"Above all, we really enjoy creating twists on our core range beers, and pushing the boundaries of our existing recipes. Green Heathen does just that.”

Launching at the Manchester bar on Tariff Street as well as at Northern Monk's Leeds Refectory on Friday July 5, the collaboration is Green Times Brewing's second cannabis beer.

The company launched its High Flyer session IPA last year, which is stocked at bars including The Whiskey Jar and El Capo in the Northern Quarter.

Bosses say the Green Heathen IPA has 'soft, resinous, tropical flavours' from the 'symbiotic' CBD and hops, which originate from the same plant family.

Green Times Brewing managing director Carl Boon, from Cheadle, said: "A cannabis infused beer really is a perfect partnership.

"Northern Monk is also a well-respected brewery with global reach and we really like their ethos of collaborating with other businesses to help strengthen the north for positive change.

"We are very proud of Green Heathen and based on the success of High Flyer, we expect this beer to fly off the shelves.”
