Manchester's food and drink haven Hatch will TREBLE in size this summer - with a double-decker bus serving Vietnamese food

Hatch - the independent food, drink and retail destination on Oxford Road - has revealed plans for a huge expansion this summer.

'Phase two' will see the site beneath Mancunian Way expand from 2,480 sq ft to a massive 11,840 sq ft, complete with new roof terraces, creative workspaces, retail spaces and new and food and drink offerings.

Hatch first opened in December 2017, a development of colourful shipping containers similar to those at Boxpark in London.

Now, in addition to the existing open air courtyard, there will be room for even more independent food and drink brands, from pop-up kiosk-style offerings to more permanent restaurant and bar operations.

Many of the larger units will take up double-stacked shipping containers with open air roof terraces.

A 1999 double decker bus will park up as part of the expansion, transformed into a Vietnamese kitchen by Hanoi 75 - its street food offering will be centred around bahn mi sandwiches.

Taking inspiration from festivals, Hatch will add a stage, rooftop DJ terrace, and space for gigs and community gatherings.

The expansion will factor in both indoor and outdoor spaces, with public art, twinkling lights and free public spaces.

A brand new shopping zone made up of 10 new containers will be created too.

A range of innovative brands are expected to join anchor business Nordic Muse, a Scandi-inspired jewellery and homeware business created by Jenny Maxwell.

Nordic Muse has been part of the Hatch development for eight months now and will be joined by ex-Hatch favourites Stutter & Twitch (vinyl experts).

Also joining the retail line-up is Clay Studio, a ceramics studio that leads workshops and courses, and winners of the 2018 Hatch retail competition giving them a free 160 sq ft container for four weeks.

Hatch's creative community will be bolstered with the addition of new workspaces and studios, offering flexible and affordable space for independent makers and artists.

This expansion will transform Hatch into a multi-purpose 'village', and a key part of Circle Square, a new city neighbourhood for Manchester which is set to open in 2020.

Hatch phase two is due to be revealed on Oxford Road in June this year.
