Manchester's Christmas lights switch-on will move to a new location this year

Manchester's popular Christmas lights switch-on event will move to a new location this year as the transformation of the town hall continues.

For the first time in more than two decades, the festive event will move away from Albert Square and instead relocate to Deansgate .

Taking place on Thursday November 14, the switch-on will be close to the Cathedral.

The Manchester Christmas Markets will open the week prior, on Friday November 8.

Marking the start of the festive season, the Christmas lights switch-on attracts thousands of people for a night of live entertainment.

Last year's event was headlined by Jonas Blue, Max George, the cast from Wicked, Dr Dolittle and The Producers.

The acts for 2019's event will be announced in the coming weeks.

Councillor Pat Karney said: "Albert Square has been our Christmas lights home for many years but it’s exciting to try a new location while the Town Hall transformation continues.

"Get this in your diary now. The show is never one to be missed as we welcome Christmas in Manchester – Santa’s favourite city, of course."

Councillor Luthfur Rahman, Manchester City Council’s executive member for culture and leisure, said: "Deansgate is tried and tested, and the stage show will be the spectacular event we have come to expect from our Christmas lights switch-on.

"It’s a family show and a great excuse to get everyone together to celebrate the festive season in Manchester."
