Manchester's biggest ever outdoor ice rink opens in city centre for Halloween and Christmas 2022

Manchester's Cathedral Gardens has welcomed its biggest ever ice rink - and it's staying until January.

Skate Manchester has opened for Scare Skate, part of the annual Halloween in the City event, and will remain in place across the festive season.

As ghoulish inflatable monsters take over Manchester this week, one of the iconic MCR monsters has taken centre stage at the 813 sqm rink, which features Halloween -themed music and lighting for added effects.

'Frightfully good fun' is promised across half term right until October 31. On Sunday, October 30, Manchester's newest social destination New Century, in nearby Hanover Street, is playing host to its own monster when it holds a 'Halloween Spooktacular'.

Grown ups and kids alike are promised a fun-packed day of Halloween activities that will take over the whole of the New Century space, including the events hall upstairs and downstairs kitchens, which serve up everything from pizza and burgers, to sushi and plant based Asian food.

The event, between 1pm and 5pm, will feature a bogey man bouncy castle, frightful face painting, spooky dancing and more.

Once Scare Skate comes to an end on Halloween itself, Cathedral Gardens will then transform into a 'winter wonderland' - with a 'dazzling' seven-metre tall Christmas tree replacing the monster and taking centre stage in the middle of a custom made ice path, which will hold an additional 30 skaters.

Rob Derry, managing director, ice and special events at Arena, which coordinates the event, says: “Halloween is always a spectacular time in Manchester, and we’re thrilled to be part of the iconic Monsters in the City trail for another year. In the beautiful setting of Cathedral Gardens, Scare Skate offers an exciting and unique activity that will bring all of the family together.”

Tickets for Scare Skate are available now, with prices starting at £14.50 for adults and £12.50 for children, with discounted family, group bookings and season tickets also available. Students and key workers will also benefit with a dedicated discount.

Skate Manchester will be open daily from November 2 to January 2, except for Christmas Day. Visit the website here to book.
