Manchester’s best South East Asian restaurants assemble to help those in food poverty

Some of Manchester’s finest South-East Asian restaurants are getting together in a bid to raise money to help beat food poverty in the city. Upscale Chinese eatery Tattu and newcomer Neon Tiger are among those getting together for the fundraiser for non-profit Eat Well MCR.

Joining them for the banquet will be Mackie Mayor’s New Wave Ramen, recently nominated for Food Trader of the Year at the Manchester Food and Drink Festival, city fave Tampopo, and Rice Over Everything, Burmese makers of fine chilli oils, who will be knocking up something special on the night.

On the menu will be dim sum, sushi and sashimi, special curries and platters of fragrant rice, fresh Asian-style salads and ramens, as well as a wealth of desserts. World-famous illustrator, artist and DJ Stan Chow will be pitching up on the night too to provide the soundtrack.

The event will be happening at Hello Oriental, who will also be providing dishes on the night. Co-owner Ricky Yip said: “It's a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the food from across this region and showcase a small slice of what's on offer in Manchester.”

The event was all set to happen in September, but was postponed following the death of the Queen. It will now take place on November 30, with tickets now available here.

The menu will go like this - an arrival cocktail and snack from Neon Tiger, a selection of starters, sushi, sashimi, dim sum and salads from Hello Oriental, Rice Over Everything and Tattu, then a middle course from New Wave Ramen. It's followed by a selection of main courses from Tampopo, Hello Oriental and Rice Over Everything, and then desserts from Hello Oriental and Tattu.

All proceeds from the ticket sales will be going to Eat Well MCR, the organisation set up by chef Mary-Ellen McTague to combat food poverty in the city. Since setting it up at the beginning of the pandemic, it has recruited restaurants and kitchens across the city to help it achieve its goal of delivering fresh, chef-made food to those in need.

To date, it has provided a staggering 70,000 meals to families experiencing homelessness, women taking refuge in sheltered accommodation, parents of children staying in hospital, food banks and schools supporting families affected by food poverty.
