Manchester Road in Denton closed outside Crown Point for 24 hours after oil spill

A main road is set to be closed for 24 hours after a 'large' oil spill.

A57 Manchester Road, in Denton, is closed in both directions between The Red Lion pub and Lidl.

Tameside Council has confirmed that the affected section of the road could be closed until tomorrow.

In a tweet, a spokesman wrote: "Road closure of Manchester Road outside Crown Point.

"Fire and Rescue have advised that the closure will be in place for at least 24 hours."

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) suggested that Market Street is also affected and asked that people stay away from the area.

A spokesman on the GMP Traffic Twitter account wrote: "Road closures in place around Market Street, Denton following a spillage.

"Please avoid the area and adhere to the closures in place for pedestrians and vehicles to avoid any slips or accidents."

Traffic monitoring website Inrix said that the oil is hydraulic fluid.

An update on the site reads: "A57 Manchester Road in both directions closed, slow traffic, due to oil spillage from The Red Lion Pub to Lidl.

"Reported a large spillage of hydraulic fluid, affecting traffic between Manchester and Sheffield."
