Manchester restaurant extends 'pay what you feel' menu in response to cost of living crisis

A neighbourhood restaurant has extended its ‘pay what you feel’ policy in the wake of the continuing cost of living crisis. The Gherkin in Levenshulme will be running its menu tonight until 9pm.

It features main courses like homemade curries, which come with rice and chips, a falafel salad, a courgette soup, and mushroom nuggets with chips. There is also a roast dinner option, involving a butternut parcel or a mushroom wellington, and Beyond Burgers available too.

The pay as you feel Monday night offer was set up a few months ago, coming in response to the refugee crisis caused by the war in Ukraine. However, the popular vegetarian restaurant and bar has now decided to extend it to people feeling the pinch of higher bills and rising costs in the shops.

You can either ‘pay what you feel’ at the end of your meal, or choose to ‘pay forward’ for someone else coming in after you, or simply donate cash too.

In addition to the menu, it has also set up a ‘Kindness Kabinet’, in which people can donate anything from food to clothing for anyone who might need it.

The Gherkin, on Slade Lane, holds regular events most nights of the week, from open mics and quizzes to live music and DJs at weekends.
