Manchester Pride 2019 tickets, line up, parade details and everything you need to know

It is an event full of colour, fun and most importantly love and it's back in the city this year.

Manchester Pride 2019 will take place across the bank holiday weekend, stretching from Mayfield to Deansgate, from Friday August 23 to Monday August 26 - the peak of all summer activity.

The annual music event, which has been a staple of the city for a number of years and is one of the longest running pride celebrations in the country, is on the move this year as its main music programme will be coming from Mayfield Depot.

Manchester Pride has a lot to be proud of, having begun its life as a small fundraiser back in the 80s, know as Mardi Gras in the 90s and spent a bit of time as GayFest in the 00s.

In 2007, Manchester Pride became a registered charity, campaigning for equality and challenging discrimination, and since then has raised more than £1.5 million.

Here's all you need to know about this year's event.

Why has the festival moved this year?

The four-day festival's newly named Manchester Pride Live has had to be moved away from The Village for the first time due to development in the area.

But it will still remain a huge part of the event with a new Gay Village Gathering event over the weekend with a stage for community performers, markets.

The event will take place throughout the Mayfield site in Piccadilly as The Depot, The Yard, The Sorting Room, The Platform and The Arches are transformed into a true rainbow spectacular.

When is the parade?

Manchester Pride attracts tens of thousands of people each year, particularly to watch the family-friendly parade as it weaves across town from Liverpool Road to Whitworth Street, passing the town hall and the Gay Village.

And this year's theme has been announced as Deep Space Pride: A Future World of Equality.

The theme has been chosen to acknowledge the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, widely considered to be a pivotal moment in the gay liberation movement and the LGBT+ charity is inviting the city to look ahead and envisage what the world could look like in the distant future, particularly regarding LGBT+ communities and the attitudes towards them.

It will take place on Saturday, August 24.

Who's playing Manchester Pride Live?

The line-up is also pretty special this year as US popstar Ariana Grande is set to return to Manchester, her first performance in the city since the One Love concert held in the wake of the terror attack at her Manchester Arena show in 2017.

The 25-year-old will headline the Sunday night slot alongside the likes of 80s duo Bananarama, singer-songwriter Becky Hill, former X Factor contestants Four of Diamonds and Liverpool singer Chelcee Grimes.

Ex-Girls Aloud star Cheryl and former N-Dubz singer Tulisa, are also amongst the stars who will perform live at the event on Sunday.

Saturday night of Manchester Pride Live will be lead by British synth-pop band Years and Years along with soul singer Emeli Sandé, transgender German singer songwriter Kim Petras, X Factor winner Louisa and grime and hip hop artist Lady Leshurr.

Dance acts across the weekend include Basement Jaxx, Faithless, Gok Wan, Nicky Siano: Hallelujah Disco, Rhythm of the 90s, We Love Pop, Jodie Harsh, Hercules and Love Affair, and K-Klass Live.

What else is happening over the weekend?

Also making up the four-day celebration will be the Superbia Weekend, an alcohol-free space offering premieres and art works, and the place to attend the post-Pride Party as well as the Gay Village Gathering which is a street party with community performances and markets and Youth Pride MCR, a free event for 16- to 25-year-olds.

The event will culminate with the candlelit vigil at Sackville Gardens where the community gathers to remember those lost to HIV, those living with it and the LGBT+ people suffering persecution around the world.
