'Manchester needs cycle lanes everywhere'

As names go, Freda Sui Generis is one of the more unusual ones to feature on I Work in Town.

That’s the name one staff member in Ridelow, the cycling shop on High Street, gives the MEN on agreeing to take part in this. She explains this is her moniker, but most people call her Freda now.

She’s warm, friendly, and genuinely engaging to talk to. She also loves cycling.

So, what makes Freda tick?

Where’s your favourite hidden gem?

I’m going to be biassed and say here! We’ve got so much going on in one building and there’s a different atmosphere every day.

What’s your favourite view of the city or in the city?

I used to smoke cigarettes and we have a really nice fire escape, so standing on the side you can see the hustle and bustle of everything.

In the opposite direction, the car park, you can see this whole street.

Where’s best to go for your dinner in town?

Kabana, round the back. It’s reasonably priced and I’m Pakistani, so it serves my home cuisine.

Where would you take someone to show them the real Manchester?

Northern Quarter for drinks, food I would take them to Corn Exchange and things to do I would probably go to Matt and Phred's or to Dive, and Twenty Twenty Two where they have the old school benches and ping pong.

What’s your favourite Mancunian neighbourhood?

I’m going to say here. I’ll stay true to NQ.

What are the five words that best describe the city?

Vibrant, understanding, empathetic, up-and-coming, and fun!

City or United?

United.

Liam or Noel?

Neither.

Your favourite city pub is…?

The Bottega in Selfridges — there’s a beautiful view, Italian food, and cocktails.

Who is your favourite city ‘character’?

There’s a creative director who does a lot of streetwear. He’s called Ste Wing and he’s a really cool dude. He’s got tattoos and his outfits are always on point.

What’s the one thing you’d add to Manchester if you could…

Cycle lanes, everywhere! Like Oxford Road. If it was like that when I was at university, I’d have cycled. Manchester is not the kindest place to cycle outside of the city centre.
