Manchester named as the best city in the UK for jobseekers

Manchester is the best city in the UK for jobseekers, according to a study based on pay, unemployment and rents.

The North West city was 22nd in a list of cities from 16 countries, ahead of Edinburgh (24th), London (25th) and New York (26th).

Jobs site Adzuna said there are more than 16,000 vacancies in Manchester, which also has a strong cost of living-to-earnings ratio, with the average rented two-bed flat (£742) accounting for around a quarter of average monthly pay.

London has just over 100,000 advertised vacancies, but the cost to rent a two-bed flat (£1,596) is equivalent to 43% of average monthly pay, said Adzuna.

Birmingham tops the chart for affordability in the UK, with the average cost to rent a two-bed flat (£684) equivalent to 22%, the study suggested.

Andrew Hunter, co-founder of Adzuna, said: "Despite the global pandemic, the UK is still a land of opportunity for jobseekers, with London offering the fourth-highest vacancy count of any city, and thriving hubs Manchester and Birmingham offering great career options and lower living costs.

"But Covid-19 has also accelerated the trend to remote working. Jobseekers no longer need to live in the city where they work in the way they did five years ago and this could trigger a mass exodus from the most costly cities into cheaper areas.

"Despite the draw of opportunities, a brain drain is a very real threat to cities like London, San Francisco and Los Angeles."

Adzuna said its research indicated that St Petersburg in Russia was the best city internationally for jobseekers, followed by Vienna, Austria.
