Manchester mayor sends Man City message over Liverpool title blow

Manchester mayor Andy Burnham has expressed his thanks to Manchester City for beating Arsenal 3-0 in the Premier League.

The result on Wednesday night, in which Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden all found the back of the net, meant Liverpool's gap at the top of the table was cut to 22 points with nine games remaining.

Should City have lost, the Reds would have maintained their 25-point lead in pole position which in turn would have meant they were able to win the Premier League title with a victory at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Everton fan Burnham, though, was seemingly delighted at the fact this prospect was now off the table for Jurgen Klopp's men.

The Labour politician and tweeted : "From the bottom of my heart, thank you @ManCity."

The European champions will face the Blues on Sunday now knowing that a win will see them move to within three points of claiming the top-flight trophy, with their next match coming against Crystal Palace at Anfield next Wednesday.
