Manchester Kimpton Hotel confirms jobs at risk as redundancy consultation begins

Job losses are on the way at Manchester's Kimpton Clocktower Hotel and its Refuge bar and restaurant.

The InterContinental Hotels Group, which owns the Oxford Street landmark - previously known as The Principal and, prior to that, The Palace - has launched a consultation process to resize and restructure the team.

A spokesperson declined to say how many roles are at risk but the M.E.N understands a significant proportion of employees are involved in the consultation process.

The sector has been hit hard by the impact of lockdown, and although hotels and restaurants were permitted to open again at the weekend, the Kimpton has yet to do so.

It's expected that the ongoing effect of the pandemic on international tourism, events and weddings will continue to have a profound impact on the business.

A spokesperson for the Kimpton Clocktower Hotel said: "This is a very difficult time for our industry, and we have done everything to protect and retain jobs for as long as possible.

"The hotel and restaurant are currently closed and while we are looking forward to welcoming guests back when we can reopen, it will take time for travel and tourism to return to pre-coronavirus levels.

"As a result, we have launched a consultation to resize and restructure our team, which unfortunately is likely to involve some redundancies.”

The hotel is not expected to reopen until the autumn but it is hoped the The Refuge restaurant and bar will reopen earlier, over the summer.
