Manchester flooding: Major incident declared as streets and university left underwater

Two main roads in Manchester have been closed off this morning due to serious flooding that made part of the city's university "look like Venice".

Oxford Road, near the University of Manchester and the Manchester Royal Infirmary, and Lloyd North Street are both closed off.

Both are main roads, with Oxford Road being one of the busiest bus routes into the city centre.

Oxford Road is shut between Booth Street West and Grafton Street and Lloyd Street North is closed between Denmark Road and Burlington Road, the Manchester Evening News reports.

United Utilities said the leak, which has been caused by a burst water main, has also left some houses and properties in Manchester without water this morning.

A spokesperson for United Utilities said: "Some customers in the locality of the burst may be experiencing a loss of water or low pressure.

"Our teams on site are working as quickly as possible to rectify this.

"We would like to thank everyone for their patience while we complete this emergency repair.”

According to reporter Chris Slater, a university staff member said that at 5am one part of the university campus "looked like Venice", but she praised firefighters for doing a “great job” in removing the water.

Engineers are on their way to the site, they added on their website.

GMP posted a picture of the flooding on Oxford Road this morning.

A huge pool of water can be seen on the road outside some of the university's main buildings.

"The flooding is caused by a burst water main and is creating substantial disruption to the local area. Oxford Road is closed between Booth St and Grafton St and six fire engines and a Command Unit are in attendance.

"United Utilities have declared a major incident and are at the scene alongside Greater Manchester Police, Manchester City Council and representatives of the University of Manchester.

"There is currently no impact on access to the hospitals nearby.

"Shortly before 0900 this morning United Utilities have successfully isolated the burst pipe.

"Several buildings have been flooded and firefighters are working hard to minimise damage and remove flood water."

Students have been asked to stay away from the Oxford Road area of the campus.

There is 'no timescale' yet on when the road will reopen, but all travel and transport updates will be posted on social media by Transport for Greater Manchester, Manchester City Council has said.
