Manchester derby 10-year head to head record - and what it tells us about Utd and City

Manchester United play host to bitter rivals Manchester City this Sunday - and the match has added significance.

For years the Red Devils reigned supreme where this tie was concerned, so much so that the game wasn't considered anywhere near as important as Liverpool vs United.

But in 2008, Manchester City were bought out by Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and immediately things started to change.

On the same day the Citizens beat Real Madrid to the £32.5million signing of Robinho.

United were forced to sit up and take notice; and prompt Sir Alex Ferguson to label City "noisy neighbours" - a compliment, in hindsight.

In 2009, City stuck the boot in by putting up the money to sign Carlos Tevez after he waved goodbye to Manchester United.

A year later and City splashed out an unprecedented £120million on the likes of David Silva, Yaya Toure and Mario Balotelli.

And a year after that came the club's first bit of silverware from the new generation - an FA Cup, courtesy of a victory over Stoke.

These days City go into the Manchester derby as favourites, as United have suffered something of a decline post-Sir Alex Ferguson.

But the head to head record of the two teams over the past 10 years tells a slightly interesting story.

Since 2010, Manchester City and Manchester United have faced each other 27 times.

The Citizens have come out on top in 12 of these encounters, and the Red Devils have also come out on top in 12 of these encounters.

Perhaps Man United's greatest result in this time came in April 2018, when two goals from Paul Pogba and one from Chris Smalling saw them win 3-2 at the Etihad.

City's, meanwhile, came in October 2011, when Balotelli and co. ran riot at Old Trafford, and the noisy neighbours beat United 6-1.

The other three matches ended in draws.

This Sunday's derby will mark the last time the rivals face off against each other in a decade - and one team may come out the other side with the bragging rights, as long as the two clubs don't cancel each other out and draw.
