Manchester Cycleway to receive £300,000 in improvements

Funding has been approved for improvements to be done on the Manchester Cycleway.

The off road cyclist and pedestrian route that goes through Chorlton, Fallowfield, Levenshulme and Gorton will see £300,000 of funding from the the Government's Safer Streets Fund for works.

Manchester Council says the improvements will include:

  • Providing a more open route so multiple cyclists and pedestrians can use the path

  • Upgrading access points to make entrances more prominent and accessible

  • Improving the connection of the routes to different neighbourhoods

  • Improving the landscape to attract more people to use the routes

Funding will also be allocated to improve the overall signage along the route.

Councillor Tracey Rawlins, Executive Member for Environment and Transport said: “We know how valued this walking and cycling route is for residents in south Manchester. Providing a green artery which cuts through the urban surroundings, the Manchester Cycleway is something we want to enhance and protect.

“We welcome the arrival of Safer Streets Funding which will let us make much-needed improvements to the area.

"Small steps like boosting the amenity of the route, and making it easier for people from all walks of life to access can go a long way in attracting people to walk, wheel or cycle.

“We have big ambitions for the Manchester Cycleway and we are excited to continue the improvements to this popular route."

Starting on February 27, site preparation and landscaping will be done on the route's Yellow Brick Road stretch.

Larger upgrades are now being evaluated, and plans are being finalised in preparation for implementation starting in late spring or early summer 2023.
