Manchester could look very different... and very green if this video is to be believed

Manchester could look very different and very green if this video is anything to go by.

Campaigners have shared a video of what well-known areas of Manchester would look like if more plant life was allowed to grow there.

With living walls and pocket parks springing up in cities across the UK and a greater focus on reducing air pollution nationally, campaigners Groundwork Greater Manchester said they want to remind people how much space there is in urban areas for plant life.

The group is a not-for-profit organisation that wants to create a sustainable future for the people of Greater Manchester.

Deansgate Castlefield Metrolink station already has a living wall next to one of its staircases, which acts as a carbon catcher - absorbing CO2 and other pollutants from the nearby A56.

The campaigners want to see more of this kind of initiative repeated across Greater Manchester, so they've put together a video showing how this could be done.

Sites they've redesigned through "urban greening" include Deansgate's NCP car park and Tib Street car park.

Some people were concerned about how these green spaces would work in practice.

Twitter used Mike Ripley said: "I’d say the biggest barrier is not installation, but maintenance!"

Another, Api:Cultural, added: "Remind us how much water those green walls need for irrigation?"

To allay these fears, retired engineer Chris Gannaway explained: "As part of the greening project surface water collection technology can be retro fitted and used cutting down the discharge to sewers and associated problems of urban flooding associated with climate change."
