Manchester construction firm hires twelve former Bardsley employees following firm's collapse

A Manchester construction firm has hired twelve former Bardsley employees following the firm's collapse last year.

Around 200 people were left without a job after the Tameside-based firm entered into administration on the last Friday before Christmas.

Well-known through the North West, the firm has been involved in a number of key building projects in Greater Manchester.

But the company suffered severe cash flow problems during 2019 after delays in payments from a number of projects.

Goodwin Construction announced on Tuesday, they had taken on twelve employees who had been made redundant.

The award-winning contractor was founded in 2012, and is currently working on a number of residential developments across the city.

Managing Director, Richard Goodwin said he felt compelled to help former employees after working for Bardsley Construction at the beginning of his career.

"I worked for Bardsley while qualifying as a Quantity Surveyor from Salford University," Mr Goodwin said.

"I was extremely proud to be part of the team and therefore deeply saddened by news of their administration.

"I have a lot of respect for the company and know the level of quality and experience of the people there, so creating jobs for some of those facing redundancy seemed like the next natural step."

The new starters will be based at the firm's new premises in south Manchester.

Company bosses say they expect the revenue for this year to reach in excess of £70 million.

Mr Goodwin added: "The new appointments come at a great time for us.

"We are currently laying foundations for our continued growth and investing in and enriching our senior management team is a vital part of our plans.

"The new Bardsley staff will not only be a great addition to the team but a way of further strengthening our service, quality, project diversity and wider commitment to excellence in the field of construction.”

Bardsley had been one of three contractors appointed to deliver the £200m Meadowside residential development on the edge of the city centre.

The 12-storey block Mount Yard was due for completion in summer 2020.

The M.E.N understands another contractor will be lined up to finish the job, although the completion date is likely to be pushed back.

In November, Bardsley were awarded the contract for a £11m skills centre at Tameside College.

The contractor was also responsible for a number of residential projects in Fallowfield, Gorton and Sale.

"Our staff are at the heart of everything we do, which is why we’re working on creating an environment where our people can thrive," Mr Goodwin said.

"There are a number of projects in progress and many more exciting things in the pipeline we can’t wait to announce.

"We’ve recently secured projects with a total value of £30million and are also in negotiations to secure further work worth an estimated £40million.

"Though we’re not about filling order books for turnover, our mission is to grow the company in a sustainable way with strong foundations for growth."
