Manchester coffee shop stocks 'freezer full of ice cream' just for dogs

A Manchester coffee shop with a freezer full of dog-friendly ice cream has transformed itself into 'what a coffee shop should be'.

House of Esk, on Cotton Field Wharf Marina, is accessible from the Rochdale Canal towpath, a popular cycling and dog walking route, and has a large outdoor seating area with views across the water.

Not only do they have a selection of cakes, milkshakes and coffee, but they also cater for dogs.

In a post to Instagram, House of Esk said: “It’s important to us that your four-legged friends also enjoy their experience here at House of Esk, which is why we’ve a freezer full of ice cream for dogs!

“And watch this space as when our kitchen is up and running, there'll be a dish on there for you pup too!”

The ice cream comes from Marshfield Farm, and was inspired by the family farm dog who followed her owners so faithfully they felt like she deserved to have a treat too.

It is made much the same way as normal ice cream, but the sugar and fat content is reduced and a lactase enzyme is added to reduce the lactose content.

The ice cream also includes a ‘Joint Aid for Dogs’, a specialist dog food supplement containing Vitamin C, Omega 3, Curcumin and Glucosamine.

One satisfied customer said on Google Reviews: “Super friendly staff and super dog friendly. Lemonade loves the puppy ice cream they have here.

“Big mugs of coffee and big crepes. I would come with the dog again!”

Another added: “Always a great selection of sweeties! The staff are always very friendly and helpful.

“They're very dog-friendly which is a bonus and yes, they have doggie ice-cream that Kiri lapped up with relish and gusto! I was rather envious, so I had to partake myself.”

A third commented: “Excellent little place with fantastic staff who were so friendly and helpful, they really went above and beyond ie. they recognised we had a kid and a dog and sorted everything out for us so that all were happy.

“This is the sort of place where you can have a nice relaxing coffee whilst looking over the marina.”

The cafe is open Tuesday-Thursday 11am-6pm, Friday-Saturday 11am-9pm and Sunday 11am-7pm. House of Esk is located at 6 New Union St, M4 6FQ. For more information follow their Instagram here and Facebook here .
