Manchester City youngster in talks with Patrick Vieira over Crystal Palace move

Manchester City have opened talks with Crystal Palace to discuss the possible transfer of Morgan Rogers this summer, according to the latest reports.

City bought the 18-year-old from West Bromwich Albion for a reported £8 million fee back in 2019, but is yet to make a senior appearance since joining the club.

Rogers settled in well at academy level and caught the eye at Lincoln City last season in League One, registering six goals and four assists in 25 league appearances.

But competition for places in the champions' first-team squad is stiff, and the 18-year-old would likely struggle for playing time in the considerable future.

Former Manchester City midfielder Patrick Vieira, who recently succeeded Roy Hodgson as manager, has reportedly expressed interest in Rogers, according to the Daily Mail. Talks are now underway to bring the England youth international to Selhurst Park.

City will reportedly demand £7 million for the services of Rogers as well as a percentage of the sell-on fee.

Rogers will be hoping to follow the example set by another young winger who left the City academy to progress elsewhere. Jadon Sancho joined Borussia Dortmund as a 17-year-old in 2017 and has since flourished, earning himself a big money move to Manchester United this month.

Guardiola will be hoping history does not repeat itself. Rogers is a pacey winger who can play in a number of roles across the front three and could be a valuable addition to Patrick Vieira's side.

Vieira previously worked as the manager of City's Elite Development Squad and enjoyed a stint as head-coach of the City Group's New York City FC in MLS. His close ties to the club could open up a close relationship with Palace.

Rogers could pave the way for more City youngsters to move to South London and earn valuable experience in the Premier League.

Selling him for £7 million is a gamble considering what happened in the past, but if City can negotiate a suitable sell-on clause they can still reap the rewards of his success.
