Manchester City’s incredible Premier League winning record is still a bit away from what Jersey Bulls and Rutherglen’s Luke Campbell have achieved – but Bulls have nothing to show for it.
Campbell’s side have won all of their last 36 games over two seasons, but with both campaigns declared null and void, they can’t achieve promotion.
The defender says the comparison to Pep Guardiola’s champions-elect – who are on a 21-game winning run down south – is a bit tongue in cheek, but they are proud of their record and just want to get back to action.
That might happen sooner rather than later, though, and with the prospect of reconstruction of the Combined Counties League, Bulls could be moving up a division, which might bring with it a crack at the FA Cup.
Campbell, who has scored an impressive 10 goals in 28 games for the island club, said: “We’re sitting watching Match of the Day, seeing Man City and thinking ‘hey, we’re doing better than that!’
“I think to compare it to Man City is a bit over the top, but I can see what people are saying.
“It is a good achievement and we’re proud of it, but it’s a little bit frustrating not to have anything to show for it, with regards to promotion or anything like that.
“We kind of knew this season was going to be null and void again – we had only really played four league games and a couple of cup ties, and with the situation in the UK as well as Jersey, it was hard to travel.
“To fit it all in before the end of the season was going to be a tough ask, to be honest.
“I’ve heard the FA might look to restructure the leagues and hopefully if that’s the case we can play a bit higher up next season.
“There is talk of us getting into the FA Cup and that would be good. We played one game in the FA Vase this year, which was good, but to play in the FA Cup would be a great achievement and would put us on the map, if we’re not already on it.
“It would be good for the island if we were to get one of the big teams to come over, if we got a home tie, and that’s something to look forward to, if it comes about.”
Campbell, who is a quantity surveyor on Jersey, hopes they can get back soon, and with grassroots level games potentially starting back up this weekend, he says Bulls could be just months away from getting back to training.
“I’m looking forward to getting back playing sooner rather than later,”he said, “but health and safety is paramount at the moment.
“It needs to be safe to actually play, but we are looking forward to it.
“I think we can start local football here on March 8, so that would be good, in hope that the new season will start in August or September.”
