Manchester City v Manchester United - in pictures

football: Man City v Man Utd
The major news before kick-off is that former Manchester United stalwart Paul Scholes has been coaxed out of retirement to help mask the dearth of match-fit (and quality) players at the heart of United's squad. Scholes retired at the end of last season and now finds himself on the bench for what promises to be a tasty fixture against the blue half of the city

Naturally, the home fans are revelling in the glory of their 6-1 win at Old Trafford earlier in the season. Painful memories for United fans

Speaking of United fans (and of former United midfielders), here's a notable one ... David Beckham is watching the action from the stands with his sons

City are causing by far the most trouble in the opening minutes but from United's first significant attack, in the tenth minute, Wayne Rooney leaps on the edge of the box and guides a thumping header in off the underside of the bar Photograph: Nigel Roddis/Reuters

Two minutes later, Vincent Kompany relieves Nani of the ball with a firm two-footed challenge. Nani spins round in a bid to win the ball back but, before he can, the referee parps on his whistle ... Photograph: Andrew Yates/AFP/Getty Images

It's a controversial decision. Yes, Kompany went in with both feet, but he won possession cleanly and there was no real danger to Nani who didn't have the ball in his stride

FA Cup: Man City v Man Utd
Needless to say United are able to exploit their numerical advantage. Danny Welbeck scores their second in the 30th minute when he hooks a shot goalwards as Nigel de Jong tamely pulls out of an aerial challenge

... but the forward plunges at the rebound and heads United 3-0 up. The red half of Manchester can smell revenge. They're cheering "we want seven!" Photograph: Scott Heppell/AP
FA Cup: Man City v Man Utd
City aren't about to let that happen, though, and a goal early in the second half from Aleksander Kolarov rocks proceedings. His direct free-kick whips over the wall and inside the near post

Paul Scholes, who joins the action in the 59th minute, is in for a lively time - this game is well and truly on the boil

Sergio Aguero soon makes it 3-2 with a tap-in that results from an untidy parry by the United keeper. What a comeback this would be if City could score a third Photograph: Alex Livesey/Getty Images
FA Cup: Man City v Man Utd
City are denied a penalty of their own when Phil Jones inadvertently handles the ball in the box. The home side also have two late chances to equalise - first a Kolarov free-kick and then a corner which Pantilimon, the lanky City keeper, goes up to attack - but United survive

FA Cup: Man City v Man Utd
Both sides are applauded off at the final whistle and frankly Scholes looks knackered. City's fightback with ten men was awesome, but United are the first team to win at the Eithad in over a year and it is they who go through to the next round. And guess who they'll face ... Liverpool!

FA Cup: Man City v Man Utd
No, no. She's not flicking the Vs. Just taunting the City fans with the scoreline. Final score: 2-3
