Manchester City take swipe at Liverpool with cheeky dig about Premier League title race

The Premier League title race between Liverpool and Manchester City was a tale of fine margins.

Both teams battled to win the domestic crown with the lead changing hands more times at the top of the table than ever before and sadly for the Reds they lost out by just one point - finishing on a record-breaking 97 points as runners up.

Jurgen Klopp's side lost just once in the entire campaign, to the eventual champions in January, when City won 2-1.

It was in that game when the margins could not have been any closer for the Reds.

The best chance of the first half for Liverpool was when Sadio Mane’s effort trickled back off the post before John Stones hammered the clearance straight at goalkeeper Ederson.

The ball was threatening to bounce into the back of the net before Stones eventually cleared his lines entirely, with goal-line technology confirming the ball hadn’t crossed the line.

Stones was just 11millimetres away from conceding that comedy own goal, which would have seen Liverpool take a 1-0 lead.

Now City have posted this tweet - harping back to that occasion with a cheeky dig and a reminder that VAR ruled out that goal.

Sergio Aguero blasted the home side in front on 40 minutes  to give City a 1-0 lead at the break in that game.

The Reds responded through Roberto Firmino's second-half header, but it was Leroy Sane who rattled a shot off the post to give the hosts the lead once more before the final whistle.

The Reds may have missed out on the Premier League title, but there's no doubt Pep Guardiola would have been jealous watching Klopp and his players lift the Champions League in June - a competition City are desperate to win.
